The Decade That Was...
Hello and Happy Sunday everybody.
There will undoubtedly be a plethora of tributes, memoirs, blogs, and remembrance of the events of what happened on 9-11-01. In some ways it seems like the last decade has passed like a blip on a screen. Other times the clock has moved like molasses when thinking about the amount of money spent on different wars and changes made in the name of security.
I still remember how upset and despondent I became while watching the reports and the videos and the sound bites of those who were at Ground Zero when all hell broke loose. I also remember the Dallas News released a printing of the towers being hit. Bought two copies and gave one to my sister Barbara.
The one thing that crossed my mind was how relationships with other countries were going to change forever in the Middle East. It was tough for me to fathom that some parts of the world resent the United States for what it represents. Freedom!
A tougher lesson to pass on to my friends was the notion that freedom is NOT free. Ask any one who has taken the time to serve this country on our soil or abroad. Many people have discussed at length the source of sacrifices made to ensure that we who reside here get to enjoy what we might take for granted.
Freedom is a word that encompasses many thoughts and emotions. Some of our freedoms may have been waned because of 9-11-01. Even so, as you go about your day and think back on the last decade of your life since that fateful day remember this: We as Americans came together. We did not cower or back down.
America united and we remain united in spite of our differences. Freedom allows for many things to argue about. Add passion to that equation and you have an unbeatable combination for unifying. I'm okay with that.
It's also okay to grieve, shed tears, shed some anger, and even feel a little reactionary. So log as you don't deny what you feel. Everyone was affected that 9-11-01 day. It's okay to remember what you felt. Even more important to never forget.
Enjoy Week 1 in the NFL. Congratulations to the Grand Prairie Air Hogs for forcing a Game 4 with a thrilling 3-2 11 inning victory Saturday at QuickTrip Ballpark. Game 4 today in Grand Prairie at 2 pm.
Imagining how intense things will be in New York tonight for the Jets and Cowboys.
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
