Being conservative by nature I tend to go the low road. In 2008 I was turned on to a form of a bet that is inexpensive and actually quite fun if you win. What makes this bet more fun is if a longshot comes in first and you box the bet. To box a bet means you pay a little more so that ANY combination of your numbers hit and you win said bet. Which brings us to the Superfecta.
The overall crowds were not what I expected. You can blame the holiday for some of that to be sure. Unless you are a golf aficionado I wonder if the casual fan will brave the elements and walk around a course in windy 95 degree heat?
96 degrees at 2 pm when the coverage on CBS began. It got pretty warm inside the tent. The next three hours were a blur between seeing what the cameramen were doing and hearing what Nantz and Price were reacting to.
Friday usually tends to be the day when you deal with alot of angst. First there's the issue of finding parking anywhere near the Four Seasons. Then there's being able to have access to get to the event itself. Usually shuttles are running nonstop for the fan, the organizers, and there are even strategic locales to appease the media folk. One constant is the amount of booze that shall pass hands on this day
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of the Colonial back in the days of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. I can only imagine the conversations and the level of competitiveness. To have been able to pal alongside a Payne Stewart when he putted that 40 footer in 1999's U.S. Open. Fond memories of how red-hot Johnny Miller was to begin 1975. Ditto Nancy Lopez in 1978. Tiger in 2000.
