Happy Saturday my friends!
The warm October weather still tickles us into the mis 80s as we get a sense of endless summer when in reality after Monday night in Arlington, baseball season in Texas is over. Like that wonderful first date you never want to see end, there's a time to let go and kiss the date goodbye until the next time you meet again...
2010 has exceeded all of my expectations on a personal note. To watch a team trying to establish itself under new ownership, a newer system of play (in a hitter friendly park) and watch it succeed, well that's added gravy.
This is one time of the year where being a fan is kind of like seriously dating someone. The more you date and grow your immediate circle senses a change. If they like it they are in board. If not, they'll play along to appease you. A part of me resents the fact that now the Rangers are a nationally known commodity. I knew this before anyone else did in 2009 with just a few missing pieces.
As Game 3 shall commence in Arlington this evening something more ironic will be happening down the road in Dallas. Remember the last time Dallas saw a real title? Texas Brahms notwithstanding? 1999 with the Dallas Stars. Did the schedule makers know something we didn't to have the Buffalo Sabres in town at the same time a World Series game began in Arlington?
It was after all 1999 when the Rangers last made a playoff appearance. Maybe a stretch and maybe a friendly reminder that life is funny in that when you avoid your history, you are bound to repeat it in some way shape or form.
I will be watching the Stars and Sabres later this evening in Dallas Texas. I will then enjoy a great party at Cool River with a costume contest and a few surprises as well. I'm also told the Stars will be more than amenable to keeping the fans up to speed.
Prior to this fall, I never dreamed I'd see an ALDS and an ALCS. Being so close to the Rangers Ballpark, a part of me wants very badly to watch one game in the World Series. Economics might dictate otherwise. No matter, I am very happy that the Fall of 2010 has Texas on the roadmap for baseball. Now I know how Newy Scruggs felt when he didn't renew his Maverick tickets the year they went all the way...
Rare to have all four sports going on at once in late October. Monday it ends for me. Thankfully hockey and basketball shall fill that void. To all the Ranger fns out there and to fans of baseball in Texas, enjoy this ride. You might not get back for a while. Statistics don't lie when it comes to repeating.
Go Rangers!
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
