Ode to Gracie!
There is a young lady out there who had the distinction of being a roommate to the Master back in the day. A good one at that. I was going through a multitude of stuff and wasn't good at holding up my end of the bargain. In any event, she has a birthday today. My guess is she is now happily married with two sets of twins. Gail, happy 33rd! I hope life in the Northwest is treating you well...That's Gail on the left.
Having spent the last evening at home watching both local teams play on the road, the similarities are starting to ring familiar. The Stars and Mavericks allow the opposition to get a big lead, be it two goals or 17 points. Both teams find a way to come back and win in dramatic fashion. The Stars get a game tying goal with 1:59 left in regulation courtesy of Stu Barnes, then win in a shootout. Jussi now 7 for 7.
The Mavericks had a group effort under center by Dirk Nowitzki, Erick Dampier, and a young man who appears to be well beyond his knee troubles. The Stars have the best road record at 17-5-2. The Mavs are 18-6. The Mavs have won 7 straight and complete a 5-0 road trip. The Stars have now won three straight despite allowing the opposition to score first in 10 of 12 games.
Why not just let the Stars and Red Wings battle for the Stanley Cup and allow the Mavericks to play the Pistons to fight off the Mavericks and their new ally-DEFENSE!-for the NBA Title? Barring any health problems, this is what I now predict will happen in April. Unless you're a laid-off Ford employee, it's a great time to be a sports fan in North Texas and Michigan!
Ron Artest going to Sacramento for Peja doesn't shock me. I am actually more intrigued by the 10 player trade that occurred between the Celts and T-Wolves. Minnesota with the 2 draft picks got the better of the deal in my view.
Fans of Buffalo need not read the following. 15 years ago today, despite a time of possession of over 40 minutes by the Giants in Super XXV, Scott Norwood had a chance to be a hero. Instead his kick went wide right. I won't begrudge a team that went to the big dance four straight years, but I am reminded of the old joke about what B.I.L.L.S. stands for...'Boy, I Love Losing Super Bowls!' Relax Buffalo, I am a Viking fan...I told Daunte to tint the boat windows, and he didn't listen.
There's another first place team in town. They reside in Frisco. The Texas Tornado host a team from Alaska. I have tentative plans to take a trip out that way later this day as rain returns to North Dallas. We need it!
Make it a great weekend. See You In Las Colinas!
Over and out in Big D
