Back To Waco-Video Visits!
That track meet that played out in Waco, Texas on October 11 was one for the ages. It isn't often you see a four and a half hour classic from an offensive standpoint.
Consider that the Horned Frogs jumped ahead to a 58-37 victory before a hyped crowd of over 46,000 at McLane Stadium.
At no time did the Baylor Bears have a lead last week until the final gun went off and kicker Chris Callahan snapped a 1 for 6 drought with a game winning 28 yard field goal.
24 unanswered points and 61-58 game between two ranked teams.
Indeed it was a mob scene once the gun sounded but afterwards you'd never think that this mild mannered young man for Baylor would have withstood the challenge to deliver. Yet he did and with that we check in with Chris Callahan.
"The field goal was just a miniscule part to the whole game, Callahan stated, "I saw that kick go up and how it came off my foot-I knew it was in. I had no doubt. We've struggled this year but we've really worked on getting back to perfection. We're a resilient team. We talked about that all year"
While time did not allow for an opportunity to check in with Art Briles there was no shortage of confidence from Bryce Petty. The Bear quarterback threw for 510 yards and SIX touchdown passes. No question this shall cement the argument that Bryce will be the Heisman Trophy front runner.
"It was a good game," purred Petty, "I don't kno why I felt it, and I am not saying at any point that I doubted it at any time, but I just knew looking at the other guys faces we were going to come back in that game. With our offense and the way we play defense 21 points is not a big deal for us. The belief in each other was outstanding."
In amassing 782 total yards Petty did a solid job of bouncing back in the 4th period with three epic drives. All of them successfully taken into the end zone in under two minutes while TCU can't amass more than 47 yards in eleven minutes.
Big days for KD Cannon, Shock Linwood, and of course this workhorse Antwan Goodley. Cannon and Goodley made Bryce Petty's job much easier on 4th down conversions and getting the ball in once in the Red Zone.
We now check in with Antwan Goodley.
I was impressed by the manner in which the Baylor defense showed no signs of letting down or giving up. A very eventful first half where TCU jumped out to a 14 point lead before Baylor began to awaken. Time and again we saw some special teams come back to bite the Bears upon the posterior courtesy of a 49 yard Marcus Mallet interception for a score and an effortless 94 yard swing run for a touchdown by BJ Catalon moments after Baylor forged a 24-24 tie.
The one constant that helped to make life difficult for Boykin and Catalon in the 4th quarter was the other Bryce. Of course we speak of Bryce Hager. No signs of worry from this young man at games end. Lets now check in with Mr. Hager.
"I don't think our defesne ever really gave up," opined Hager, "We didn't stop believing. It was just one of those things we just knew and had a feeling. When we needed to step up we stepped up and our offense did the same."
Baylor improved to 6-0 with the 61-58 victory over TCU as the Bears now head to Morgantown, West Virginia for an early game tomorrow. No doubt that Baylor should roll by at least three touchdowns as Dana Holgerson and his Mountaineers come off an exciting win over Texas Tech (The Red Raiders come to Ft. Worth on the 25th).
Many Big 12 fans believe that Baylor will be untouchable the rest of the way in the run for the championship. That may very well be.
November 1st yours truly returns for another Brazos River visit when the Jayhawks visit the Bears Nov 1. In what should be a score-a-thon in Waco. Rest assured you'll get more audio, more photos, more video visits, and of course more Bear necessities when time allows.
Here's one final look back at the way last Saturday's Baylor TCU game ended...and the frenzy that followed inside McLane Stadium.
Over and out in Big D.
