Hello and Happy Saturday America!
That time is here. It has arrived and the fervor and the flavor for the fan to savor comes in many many nuances and picks. The sport of Kings has now officially come to pass. We saw some serious scoring last night in Waco, Texas as Baylor pulled off a huge upset on TCU. Put me on record when stating that I think Robert Griffith, if healthy, will be a very special player to the Bear Nation. Here's hoping so.
Back in 2001 when a newbie to North Texas I took many a road trip to parts of the Southwest. August of 2001 my travels took me to Louisiana. Shreveport and Natchitoches to be precise. Spent a solid 2 days soaking up the history, the sights, and the sounds. I was impressed with how friendly my Cajun brethren were. The meat pies were damn tasty. Louisiana had a vibe to it I really couldn't put my finger on...
Oh HOW THEY LIKE A GOOD TIME!!!!!
Of all the college teams I have seen make the trek to North Texas for sporting events, I dare say that LSU alums alongside the Aggies of A&M and Arkansas travel incredibly well! Let's not forget that the fandom in Duckland ( 50 miles south of where I lived for a spell in SW Wa.) is also very local and vocal and great about travel plans.
Friday Night in North Texas I saw but one color-PURPLE! I loved it. I mean, when you spend a decade rooting for the Huskies of Washington, almost 40 years cheering for that team of heartache-The Minnesota Vikings-and you have a 95% to 5% ratio of Tiger fans to Duck fans how can you not!?!?
It all began with a face I recognized right before the end of lunch shift. 1 time starter in the NFL in competition with John Fourcade and 1 time USFL Champion. Bobby Hebert came to Cool River with his family and we chatted up a storm. Seems he has a son who is playing for the Tigers as a linebacker. I also discovered that Bobby does a radio show in New Orleans on WWL. Of course we exchanged information. Rest assured we will be guests on our shows as the season progresses. Nice man enjoying his first time at Cool River! Thanks Bobby!
I knew it was going to be busy. We simply had no idea. Restaurant people love nights like these for the income generated but fear the amount of double seating that will happen. In essence working from behind. For five hours it was double seat after double seat after double seat. Somehow it worked out okay. The fun ended a little after 12:15 this morning.
Years ago I learned to always carry a bit of needless trivia in your back pocket with fans from other states. The mere mention of Yelberton Abraham Tittle to a Tiger fan will earn you points. Speak about the 375 potential uniform combinations courtesy of Phil Knight and you make fans.
Tiger fans over the years have always traveled well and treated me well. Watching parties here in Texas for LSU are amazing. That's all I can say about this. Last night has me awfully sore in the back today. With 3 days to heal it will be okay. Have fun tonight at Cowboys Stadium if you go. Get there early by the way.
The holiday weekend is here. Summer about over. Today in all likelihood will be the last 100 degree day we see for a while. What a summer it was. I am now ready for fall.
Make it a great weekend!
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
