On the First Day...
An event worthy of the person it is named after. I person I had the pleasure to meet for a moment on Election Day 2004 during a volleyball tournament in Flower Mound. Byron Nelson without a doubt means a lot of things to many people. Some actually go for the golf. Most go for the freak show of people and how they dress. Many become the freak show once alcohol is added to an afternoon of watching 18 holes of play in 90 degree heat. It comes with the territory.
Weather threatened to be the story earlier in the week. Today because of stormy and potentially tornado-like weather all around North Texas, there was a four hour delay in the play for he first day. This meant that many fans who were early to arrive or late to the party would make for a long and interesting afternoon.
With the Chicago Cubs also in town to play three starting tomorrow and Taste of Addison, suffice to say a lot of people will be in the area of Irving/Las Colinas. Two years in a row I was able to enjoy the action up close and personal. This year marks the first time I'll enjoy the debauchery in a fins dining establishment and watch all the chicanery in the bar on down.
First thing I wish to convey to you is that if you come to Las Colinas for the golf, get here early! Parking will be at a minimum after 9 am. I can also tell you that if you decide to partake in the booze, please designate a driver. The cops will be everywhere, and you really don't want to be the one to say that the Byron cost you fifteen grand.
In the event you walk the course and come across a guy with an alligator in his backyard, be sure to tell Kevin that you know 'Rainman'. It may allow you to get inside and enjoy a beer. You didn't hear that from me. The River shall keep me occupied. I have waited all year for this. I cannot wait.
Otherwise an interesting day that got more defined as Thursday wound itself down.
Here's to Friday...Go Justin Leonard!
Over and out in Big D
