The First Mayfest.
Happy Monday friends. Here's hoping the weekend treated you well.
Yesterday was an afternoon of firsts. Usually when I make the trek to Ft. Worth it has been to go update and renew my licence tags, only to get lost trying to find Weatherford Ave. as the roads zig-zag with that one way pattern of drive.
Yes, Ft. Worth is a much lesser and slower pace than Dallas, and yes Ft. Worth has alot more history and tradition. One of them I happened to partake in for the first time with a friend.
Mayfest is a yearly event that has been going on for a little over 30 years. Stemming from a mishap along the Trinity River, the powers that be decided to create an event that would draw the people, allow a city to show it's identity for a weekend, and for food to be enjoyed, arts and crafts to be showcased, and for music to be heard and enjoyed.
No camera and a turned off phone. My friend and I took in the sights, sounds, and smells. Nestled close to the TCU campus and the Trinity River, the locale of Mayfest provided a tranquil backdrop to an afternoon of sunshine and blue sky. I was amazed at how chill everybody...and I mean EVERYBODY...was.
It always piques my interest to see what might get the attention of the person I attend an event with. Maybe it's the food, the gadgets, or the chance to shop. Maybe it's the sales and deals provided by the many vendors. Plenty of networking going on from where we stood. Dare I say it, there were moments I was content to remain quiet and to relax.
My friend has a great sense of direction. While looking at a map, able to discern exact location and distance. Getting lost wasn't an issue. Getting involved was easy. Getting hungry was a mandatory requirement.
Surprised was I when learning that Corny Dogs were available at one of the food tents. Someone had me told the Fletcher clan only made those delicacies during the Texas State Fair. Stuck to the gut like a good cotton ball. Delicious!
My instincts dictated that a camera on hand would not be a good idea. The dog confirmed that. Double confirmation was when going the route of the funnel cake...or as my friend said, 'Damn artery clogger on a plastic plate.' I wasn't arguing, but I was drooling at the gooey sight.
The first time I enjoyed a funnel cake was 1 year ago at a Ranger game. The winds blew. You can guess what happened. No sooner do we sit down to partake in a cake, the winds blew again! Seated next to crawfish lovers... You ever see what a coked out crawdaddy might look like? No joke!
Me thinks the funnel cake did somehing to me...I was experiencing a burst of energy...and insight...the afternoon was slowly winding down and my mind began to race. I then heard those words so familiar to me, 'Willie can you please turn off the cranial and just relax?' My friend had a point.
I'll never apologize for being who I am. I will also admit to being more energetic than most at 46. In respect to my driver, knowing the drive back would be long, I tried to tone the level down. My friend is quite the trooper. Severance check now in the mail.
For those of you who have yet to attend Mayfest, next time it rolls around do so! You won't regret it. And be leery of those funnel cakes. They might hype you up!
Over and out in Big D
Mr. Will
