Life or Death of a Streak.
Happy Monday from a sizzling North Texas.
On a day when the mercury shall top the 90 degree mark for a final time this year, the only thing hotter than the weather is the lather this state is in over the sudden good fortune of the Texas Rangers. So much so that I even received an email from my first Program Director in Southwest Washington 17 years ago to talk Rangers on the air. It's amazing what winning will do...
Winning is something the Cowboys faithful are hoping for with the New York Giants playing the Death Star tonight. Last Friday the Rangers slay a Giant. Dallas tries to do the same later today, and ditto the Rangers with the Bay Area Giants later in the week. A loss tonight and the season for the Cowboys is a done deal. Simple as that!
On the subject of done deals, I want to say right here and right now that Brett Favre needs to put his pride, his ego, and his streak off to the side for the betterment of his Viking teammates. I say this not as a fan but as a realist of life and life's rules.
It is very apparent that Brett Favre's best days are behind him. Sometimes you can stay on too long for something you outgrew a while back or remain in a relationship deemed unhealthy. After 21 years in the NFL and 291 starts, you would hope that a life plan is in place after your playing days. I understand Brett has been playing ball for a long long time. I worry about Favre becoming a cripple in 5-10 years time.
Two fractures on your ankle? Brad Childress needs to put his foot down and tell Tarvaris Jackson to handle all the snaps this week. Sorry Brett but you do not give me the best chance to win. Brett needs to sit his ass down and let the streak end. It will never be topped or matched.
Two ill-advised interceptions cost the Vikings dearly in Green Bay last night. You can see where Tony Romo gets his influence from when you watch the Eastern Wisconsin product throw the ball. Kudos to the Pack for a convincing victory.
In 1980, I remember a 61-7 win by the Bears over Green Bay on 12/7th. I also remember a 62-28 victory by the Jets over Tampa Bay in 1985. Green Bay in 1983 trounced Tampa Bay by a 55-14 count. It's rare to see a team top the 60 point mark in the NFL on a given Sunday. I was shocked to watch the Raiders put a 50 spot on the board in only 45 minutes at Denver!
Darren McFadden had a great afternoon. I almost wanted to blog about 'Cable laying the groundwork' in the running game. This might be a game where Oakland turns a corner and continues their winning ways. That was too easy. Not a fun afternoon for Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow...
Miami got royally jobbed in their game but I do understand the refs ruling. Since a referee signaled 'Touchdown' with his hands, it's natural to let up and stop playing. You must then question when and if a fumble occurred and who has possession of the ball at plays end? If it wasn't a case of a score, then the call goes in Miami's favor with a 22-20 win. Instead a 23-22 loss at home. Dolphins can't buy a win at home. Go figure!
In Chicago I watched DeAngelo Hall get 4 interceptions in a 17-14 upset of the Bears. Last time I witnessed a 4 pickoff game by one player, the name Vernon Perry comes to mind in a game with the Oilers and Chargers in December 29th 1979. His touchdown run off a pick sealed the fate of Chicago Sunday.
It's too bad tonight's Giants-Cowboys isn't being played outdoors. 40 mph wind gusts would truly test the passing game. As for who I like tonight, I believe the Giants will cover on points. Quite frankly I am more worried about Tony Romo being able to keep his health intact with a porous offensive line. Kyle Kosier will not play. This gives me a bad feeling.
The Giants feature quite the running game in-between Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. I expect this to present Dallas with mismatch problems all evening. New York spoiled the party for last years Grand Opening by a 33-31 count. Expect the over on this night. Just not sure if Dallas can hang with the Men in Blue.
Tomorrow I will address what I believe will happen in the Fall Classic. It also occurs to me that within the space of a year, the city of Arlington will have hosted an NBA All-Star Game, A World Series, and a Super Bowl. In my lifetime! Now pinching myself.
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
