Manny Happy Returns!
Happy Birthday MTV and Ric Renner!
Since July 18th the mercury has hit 100 or higher 15 out of a possible 16 days. 23 in all for 2008. The forecast for the next week is more of the same with a heat advisory through Monday night. Back in April I predicted we were going to have a summer similar to 1980. I believe after the following week has run it's course, the comparisons to 1980 will start to ring some similarity, if only because the calendar days fall on the same day in 2008. These are the dog days of summer. Now is when you really start to see things heat up in the world of sports. This weekend alone the mercury shall top 108 before factoring in the heat index. Note to Mom and Dad: I do my exercise at night! Worry not.
I am glad to see Manny Ramirez in Los Angeles. I also think Manny will love going Hollywood. Having two former teammates there in Nomar Garciaparra and Derek Lowe will also be a boon. Joe Torre has a history of being able to juggle temperaments and egos. I think we will see the Dodgers winning the West and trying to cause havoc in October...Nobody is going to defeat the Cubbies. Nobody!
Jason Bay to Boston will actually be a welcome change. The fans will embrace him, Jason will just do his thing, and team chemistry will become a positive for the Red Sox Nation. Terry Francona has been successful in getting this troops ready in two of the last four years when it's time to take the title home. Many, myself included are wondering whether or not the Sox can catch the Tampa Rays. Still a 3 game lead in the East and after this weekend will equal their best win total in a season ever!
Football returns in a big way this weekend as the Hall Of Fame Inductees are welcomed and the HOF game is played in Canton, Ohio. It will feel like 'Hog Heaven' with all the Redskin inductees. The Colts and Skins will tee it up at 7pm Sunday night, August 3rd.
In case you forgot, this day in 1981 an institution was born. MTV! Remember the hourly intros with the awesome guitar lick? Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, JJ Jackson, Mark Goodman, and Alan Hunter began the revolution of music set to videos. And they said it would never last...First video to air was the Buggles 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. For brownie points, the second video to play was Pat Benetar's 'You'd Better Run'. You can't think about the 1980's without thinking about all-nighters around the TV watching Music Television. Ah, the good old days!
Blue Jays in town for three. Hope we can take two. Last night was abysmal for rookie Tommy Hunter.
Keep cool!
Over and out in Big D
