It Was On This Day...
The days will quickly dwindle down to Super Sunday in Glendale Az on February 3rd. Once that whole hype machine is over and done my energies can switch to the sport I love two weeks after. On a day when I'm sick with the crud, dealing with a nasty cold it occurs to me that:
1.One year ago today the mercury was a tad bit warmer for the start of the three day tour of the NHL coming through Dallas Texas. Three days I won't soon forget. Over 950 pictures taken and a very fan-friendly interaction process between the players and fans.
The only drawback to the 72 hours was Bill Parcells announcing this he would retire on this day! Leave it to the local collective myopia of the media to sweep the All-Star Game under the rug while pontificating about 'who the next Cowboy coach will be!' Small wonder why Dallas will not host a major sporting event ever again after 2009. At least Houston has it right...
2.One week after racial unrest when a black motorist gets shot by a local cop, Super Bowl 23 gets the business in Tampa Bay Florida with one of the better finishes we have seen in a while. 34 seconds from victory, Joe Montana finds John Taylor on a slant pattern for a stunning 20-16 victory over the Bengals. Just like in 1981 when San Fran prevailed...
3.Also this day in 1984 in Tampa Bay, the Raiders ran roughshod over the Hogs 38-9. Marcus Allen has a memorable 75 yard touchdown run after reversing his direction from left to right on the line of scrimmage. Raider fans will also remember a 3 yard INT by Jack Squirek after Joe Theisman threw an ill-advised screen...and
4. 35 years ago today the landmark decision of Roe V Wade went into effect...giving women more options than before in the name of health, choice, well being, and perceived consternation by the more religious and zealous. Not being a woman, I'll tell you that if you can't trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child?
Two more days of arctic weather before we get a tease of 70 degree weather, more to my liking...
Stay warm wherever you are. I vow to not miss anymore sporting events this year, damnit!
Over and out in Big D
Mr Will
