Things in Threes...
Years ago there was a book written by Danny Sugarman called, 'No One Here Gets Out Alive.' It was a bio on the life and death of Jim Morrison, the vocal poet singer of the 60's band The Doors. He had passed away at age 27 in July of 1971. The book spoke great volumes about his fascination with dying young. Near the end and after the passing of both Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, who were also 27, Jimbo joked that death happened in threes. I remember a joke he often stated amongst friends (usually in a drunken stupor), 'You're drinking with number three'.
Prior to tonight's matchup with Mavericks and Nuggets at the AAC, the two teams met on New Year's Eve, a game where Avery Johnson collected win #100, and in defeat Allen Iverson collected 28 points. That was also the same night that Bronco Darrent Williams lost his life in a tragic shooting.
I read it, I saw the story on TV and I still don't believe it!! Fresh from playing a charity basketball game, Bronco RB Damien Nash dies suddenly at age 24? Athletes must work hard to maintain a semblance of good shape. I cannot fathom an athlete being cut down in the prime of their life!
The fans of Denver now have two shocks to overcome in less than two months, and if you add the passing of former Ram Lamar Lundy and the tragic accident the father of LaDainian Tomlinson suffered in Waco Friday, I start to wonder if maybe there is some relevance to all of this 'things in threes' theory.
Yes the Dallas Mavericks continue their winning ways, but somehow in moments like these the games take a back seat to attempt to gain a little perspective on life's losses. Weird.
There's a movie about to be released that deals with the number 23. I had a coworker once tell me about all the things that happened to her in her life and the #23 was involved. The topper was the time I gave her a set of Dallas Stars tickets and she happily went. Later she explained why-It was the 23rd home game of the season! That's another matter for another time...
Make it a great weekend!
Over and out in Big D
