R.A.D.
It has been stated that watching a baseball game in Arlington Texas is much like arguing with an ex. If you can't keep it in the park, you are bound to lose. I certainly was not prepared for what I witnessed tonight from our guy R.A. Dickey.
In the hope of reviving a big league career, Dickey has taken on a pitch that is very tough to handle, the knuckleball. Very Few have been able to be successful at it for a long period of time. Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood (who in 1973 would be the last hurler to start both ends of a doubleheader), Charlie Hough, Tim Wakefield come to mind. There's no spin on the ball when you throw it so when it takes on nature and begins it's velocity track, you're not really sure what the ball will do.
Thursday night, the now 3-0 Detroit Tigers (Why does Detroit now have all the success in baseball, football, and hockey?! UGH!) would find the left field stands not once but SEVEN times!!!! Six of those homers yielded by R.A. Dickey. A game that Texas lost 10-6. The Tigers set a record for most homers by a team after three games (15).Nate Robinson had good stuff for five plus innings. This got me to thinking. Hell, I'm always thinking...
Know those commercials about what you do when gophers enter your yard and create havoc? I am thinking we might be able to create a new device, taglike in nature, that causes gophers to leave the yard. Gopher in baseball speak is a homerun allowed by a pitcher. This product would have to be tough. It needs a rough name. Or an anagram in this case. I give you R.A.D (R.A's initials)! Think of the slogan: 'First you'll knuckle then buckle under'. If Dickey's career in the bigs is over then I can see this guy doing commercials and making weedeater a thing of the past...
Ian Kinsler hit a solo blast in the loss while collecting three hits. Mark Teixeira also had a three hit night. Despite falling to a 1-3 record I have alot of faith that the A.L. West will be a four team race late into August and early into September. There will be no 1-12 road trip in August for the Rangers!
Tomorrow night John Koronka makes his debut for Texas. Weird to say that after this week we won't see the Red Sox or Tigers again until 2007...
Stars clinch-FINALLY! Mike Modano suffers a knee injury that might look to be serious. We shall see. Mavs-Spurs tomorrow night in San Antone! Josh Howard is back so I predict a Dallas win on the road. Mavs only a game and a half back on the Spurs.
The Masters has returned. I think Tiger and Phil will battle by the third day, and I won't rule out Sir Vijay. Don't laugh, I may one day have a golf tourney of my own...The Masters...Of Nothing...One day it could happen here in the heart of Big D!
Cowboys fans: Turkey Day at home with the Bucs. X-Mas Day with the Eagles, and New Year's Eve with the Lions. September 24th is a bye. Why mention that? That is the anniversary date that Terrell stood upon the Star in 2000 and George Teague told him 'doesn't matter where you are when you wish upon this star.' Brutal schedule, I will be surprised if Dallas makes 9-7.
Make it a great weekend.
Mr Will
