It Almost Felt Like Oxnard!
Saturday May 11th in North Texas was the kind of weather day you place into a capsule and put away for a rainy day. Sunny, mild, breezy, yet comfortable to do just about anything indoors or out. It even felt a little bit fall-like early in the morning...
Day 2 of Dallas Cowboys Rookie Mini Camp was an all day affair with a 75 minute session at Valley Ranch which lasted until the noon hour. That was followed by a 45 minute session with the media to address and answer any questions the assembled group happened to have.
Jason Garrett would then talk to the media for approximately 14 minutes about the status of the rookies in camp and those that may have caught the eye of some of the coaches. One video interview I caught with Rod Marinelli had to get scrapped due to being drowned out by the wind. There will be another day.
Afternoon practice ran from 2:30 until 4ish as the mercury began to rise and I began to feel the sunburn on my arms. A myriad of agility drills, stretching, situational playing, tackling dummies, light scrimmage with no tackling and running of routes kept my attention while trying to associate names with jersey numbers.
The 2013 current group of Cowboys, if nothing else, can and will certainly provide some excellent sound bites for inquiring minds as we lead up to OTA's May 22nd-24th. Since this date felt like a fall afternoon and football fans like to dream I was paying to two athletes who struck me as having alot of upswing for the Silver and Blue.
BW Webb #20 Cornerback William and Mary
You are going to hear terms like mobility, poise, speed, grace, and instincts when this name is mentioned. Webb's performance impressed many and caught the attention of most for the manner in which a player from a smaller university picked up on the pro level of play so quickly. Believed to maybe compete for a starting job in the fall. I liked his demeanor and appearance of being relaxed and ready to take the next step.
JJ Wilcox #27 Safety Georgia Southern
Often in practice you'll hear the term 'brother-in-law'. That's when you go easy on your teammate during the week and save your best for the real thing. It may be spring and it may have only been a mini camp for the rookies.
Someone forgot to hand that memo over to this feisty safety. The play of the day, and maybe the weekend was the hip check hit Wilcox put on running back Kendial Lawrence eliciting some 'oohs and aahs' from those who watched from a distance. Everything about JJ Wilcox speaks to the traditions and history of the Dallas Cowboys, playing football the right way with an approving smile from Tom Landry.
Quite a few locker room video chats. We won't overburden you this entry. As the days, weeks, and months take up closer to training camp and the regular season it will be the objective of Blitz Weekly to familiarize you with as many faces as possible.
A long but fun day now comes to an end. Back again in about two weeks.
Enjoy Mother's Day!
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
