The Best When Healthy!
Happy Thursday Everyone. The weekend is almost here.
The chatter by the water cooler at work all this week has been about who is going to represent well in the Olympics, and who is going to kick booty on the football field all the way to New Orleans on February 4th, 2013.
If acquisitions mean anything at all I dare say that answer might go through the city of Brotherly Love. Mind you, this will not sit well with the Silver and Blue powers that be here at Valley Ranch, Texas or Oxnard, Ca. come Sunday. On paper the Eagles made a key acquisition to help bolster their perceived 'Dream Team' status. Yesterday longtime Cowboys punter Mat McBriar signed a deal to kick in Philadelphia.
Take away a frustrating season in 2008 after breaking his foot and an injury-plagued 2011 with his hamstrings causing him pain. Mat McBriar has been one of the better punters in the NFL in the last 8 seasons. When you consider the rigors of a 16 game regular season it helps to have a punter who can kick for average, successfully find the coffin corner, keep runbacks to a minimum, and pin the opposition to where they cannot move.
In what will be his 9th season in the NFL coming from Hawaii and having a short stint with the Broncos in 2003 1 number stays in my mind: 43.8 as in average yards per punt. Stalled drive near mid-field? Push the opposition inside the 10. Stuck deep in your own territory and need some breathing room? Put the onus upon your defense to push back at the 50. This can only help the Philadelphia cause.
So many people in the know believe that the 2012 Eagles are Super Bowl worthy with a healthy Michael Vick and a complete off-season with OTA's and the like and a (we believe) more focused DeSean Jackson in addition to Middle Linebacker Demeco Ryans. Special teams are an important cog in the success of an NFL franchise. If healthy, the NFC East may have its hands full with the Gang of Green later this fall.
Taking a step up from Chas Henry? Damn good! Chances that Philadelphia improve on an 8-8 season? Even better. At least it would appear that way in July. I could be wrong, but I'm not.
Best of luck to Mat McBriar in the land of Brotherly Love. One possible reason 1960 gets revisited in six months.
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
