A Classy Way To Reach 5K!
Happy Tuesday everyone!
Okay, I'll say it. I am exhausted, run down, tired, inject your adverb here if you want. After 5 weeks of busy and anticipation and the two holidays with all the surprises that that entails, I am ready to lay down and hibernate like a bear for a month. This cooler winter weather makes that a very easy proposition too! However, that approach would then take away from the accomplishment I saw occur last night on 'Monday Night Football'.
Busy day yesterday at Valley Ranch. Jason Garrett playing things close to the vest about the health of Tony Romo and being able to handle their business in New Jersey on Sunday with the Giants. Few players were in a mood to talk today. I did get some great thoughts from Marcus Spears and Abram Elam. No one wanted to talk about the Eagle loss since 'it didn't matter'. During the press conference I indeed asked coach Garrett about being on the sidelines when Emmitt did his thing 1/2/94!
1984 was an interesting year for Dolphin fans. 2nd year quarterback Dan Marino was about to become your starting quarterback for that season. Aided by two capable receivers in Mark Clayton and Mark Duper records would be set for the 14-2 squad. Marino would pass for 5,084 yards. An unheard of mark for that time! They would lose in Palo Alto 1/20/85 to the 15-1 49ers...
It speaks volumes that said record would remain untouched for 28 years. Until last night late in the 4th quarter. Drew Brees set the new standard for passing yardage in a season as he threw for 308 yards to up the number to 5,087 in a blowout of the Falcons! Seeing history unfold moments after going off the air for the final time in 2011 was truly special.
I was not ready for the locker room speech Drew Brees would give after the game. Numerous mentions of 'we' and 'team'. That was all I needed to hear! Made me wonder exactly what in the world the San Diego Chargers did not see in him to let him go back in 2005. That was something the people of the Left Coast can ponder for years to come. The second time within 5 years Drew Brees tossed for over 5,000 yards. 15 yards short of the record a few years back playing against the Panthers.
This time around the Saints have the South locked up and will play Carolina to close out 2011. Cam Newton will no doubt seal his fate as NFL Rookie of the Year. You could make an argument for Andy Daulton and Tim Tebow. My guess is th Cam man will get this distinction.
If Cam reads this, I really hope he follows the example now set by Mr. Drew Brees. Your newest possessor of hallowed ground for yards passed for in one season. There's a good chance we might see two more quarterbacks finish out with over 5,000 yards in a season. Tom Brady most notably...Aaron Rodgers if he plays. I won't blame the lockout. I'll credit the rules that favor the quarterback...
Mavericks fall to 0-2. A 22-0 run by the Nuggets in period 2? Are you kidding me? Ouch! At least this time the deficit got as far as 33, not 35 on Christmas Day. This is not what I had in mind to start the 2011-2012 NBA season. Thunder on Thursday in their house. Go Mavs!
Make it a great day!
Over and out in Big D.
Mr. Will
