The Quarter of the Day
As I prepare for the final week of July to play itself out, it occurs to me just how much fun I have had returning to an old hobby of mine on an off day. It's roots go back to 1977. People have tried to write it off as a fad over and over again.
At one point this very hobby was something my ex-wife was really good at once overcoming her shyness. She hosted for years. I sincerely hope that Sheryl is involved with singing in some way shape or form. The ex had a good set of pipes. I of course speak of karaoke.
The term karaoke means literally 'empty orchestra'. I got my first taste of it in 1987 when a bouncer in Costa Mesa, Ca.
Five years down the road I was a host in a local bowling alley and would do the same from time to time in my travels from So-Cal to Portland to Seattle and now get to watch in Dallas.
Monday nights in Addison features a quaint little place called the Quarter Bar. Chris hosts the gig and I must tell you, this cat is not afraid to lay down the money to find new music!
What's interesting is that Chris uses a system where paper is not wasted, a rotation is tight and fair, new people hop on board, and some friends of mine get totally into it.
If I were still a smoker and a drinker, I'd probably still host part time. Alas, that isn't my objective these days. I enjoy getting to watch the kids belt out some of the music from my day and earlier.
Greg and Sheri came along for the fun. Talk about two talented characters! It is our goal to get the word out for a core group of 15-20 singers who will eat, drink, spend some money, and have some fun. I'm good for one day a week at this point in my life. All for fun and in inexpensive night out among friends.
With football season about to engulf the country, I am confident that this will not affect the core of fans who like to get out and sing.
The Quarter Bar. Worth checking out at your leisure. Half priced pizzas after 11pm for the late night crowd.
Over and out in Big D.
