No Donuts, just Glaze.
Happy Humpday from the Frozen Tundra of North Texas!
I can count on my hand the number of times I have endured a good ice storm in my life. There was the Thanksgiving Weekend in 1993 when I learned my first lesson about not slamming the brakes when having front wheel drive in Woodland Wa. I remember spinning in a circle on the I5 northbound five times before I stopped and saw an 18 wheeler about 4 miles away. I was even sober.
The worst of the icy weather I recall had to be 2/24/03 when snow would mix with ice in North Texas. The ice was almost three inches thick in some spots. Yes I had to get to work in Addison, and the bar people drank like crazy. What normally took eight minutes to get home took 45. I remember taking some great pictures of the ice hanging from the side of the work building and what had formed in the parking lot.
Pearl Harbor Day 2006 was no picnic either. About to catch a hockey game with the Stars and Florida Panthers, I noted how people really had no clue how to use their cruise control or to slow down at bridges and overpasses. I did have one harrowing moment when I saw a big rig careening out of control 75 yards head of me on the I35 going north postgame when a Honda tried to pass in front of the truck a bit too quickly.
Last night after watching Marty Turco get his 2-0 win (35th career shutout) over Atlanta, the ice pellets were falling and hard, The mercury said 26, you saw the glaze on the sidewalks and roadways. Had I fallen I'd have made a great donut. I was careful at bridges, careful at overpasses, careful to stay on the same lane marks preceded by a previous vehicle. No sudden stops and going straight home. My Ford Focus does good work on days like these. It did amaze me how some drivers choose to let A.D.D. affect their ability to do the common sense thing. If you're in a hurry to get somewhere at 12 midnight under icy conditions, you must be up to no good.
Things shall slowly start to thaw today and tomorrow. Compared to other parts of the U.S. North Texas got off easy!
This day in 1986 ice was also an issue when the Space Shuttle took off from Cape Canaveral and exploded overhead after 73 seconds. Christa MacAuliffe was one of the seven passengers on that day.
This day in 1996 the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl with a 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Arizona. Neil O'Donnell kept overthrowing and getting picked off late!
This day in 1990 the 49ers made mincemeat of the Denver Broncos 55-10 in the Superdome. That San Francisco team was one of the best I had ever witnessed in a season. Rice, Taylor, Montana, Rathman, Craig were the bomb!
Mavericks return to the AAC after getting embarrassed in Boston last Sunday. Yes I will be there as they tackle Nellie's crew from Golden State.
Time for a walk!
Over and out in Big D
