Halfway Home!
Hard to believe but we now reached the halfway point of 2008. The next week is traditionally the slowest week in restaurants and retail as people get away for the vacation and/or 4th of July proceedings. If you are one of those people please exercise caution when driving and partaking.
Congratulations to Spain taking the Euro title over Germany yesterday 1-0. Once upon a time I got to watch such luminaries as Pele, Giorgio Chinaglia, Franz Beckenbauer, Kyle Rote Jr., and even Diego Maradona. While not as big on the sport these days, I am amazed at the number of of fans who show up wearing the teams jersey or colors and scream themselves hoarse. I still think it would be hilarious to have the English speaking announcers of soccer switch sports with the Nascar announcers and vice-versa. That would sound funny! A good game and no riots thankfully...
Once again the Rangers take two of three in a series, making quick work of Jamie Moyer and the Phillies 5-1. The first place Phils have dropped 11 of 14 in their loss Sunday. Eric Hurley went a solid five and 2/3 innings. Chris Davis became the first Ranger to homer in his first two pro games according to Elias Sports Bureau. As the second half commences in baseball, the Rangers sit at 42-41. They now make a second trip to New York to battle the Yankees for three then Baltimore for three before heading home to battle the first place Angels and White Sox. Still have yet to get to two games above .500 while hitting the even mark 22 times! Ian Kinsler has had three straight three hit games and Michael Young appears to be snapping out of a prolonged slump.
Since June 4th, the Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball with a 17-4 mark to be five games out in the Central. This after an 0-9 start! Equally stunning is hot the Twins sans Torii Hunter and Johan Santana are in the hunt with an eleven game winning streak!
The Chisox exacted a little bit of revenge with a three game sweep of their own over the Cubbies. If anyone would like this South-side bunch, it would no doubt be former Oriole skipper Earl Weaver. Disciple to the mantra of get two hits and hit a bomb! Most of the White Sox' runs come via the swing. If anyone is keeping count, the overall record between these two teams in interleague play is 33-33. Even Steven!
Looking forward to the July 4th weekend. I will take two days off and do absolutely nothing!
To a good second half.
Over and out in Big D
Mr Will
