Drafts and Looks.
Here in the land of the Lone Star this time of year can downright quiet and low-key...The locals content to stay indoors and avoid the stifling heat, or use their playtime to take a ride out to one of the many lakes nearby. Usually there'll be a case or a kegger in tow to keep the mood smooth and easy. Good for you if you're one of the lucky ones.
It will be nine years on September that I stopped abusing the sauce, but that doesn't mean I wont enjoy two drafts a year. Let me correct that, make it four. In fact two of the four I enjoyed in the last week alone...NBA and NHL hockey style!
I'll give all of you a moment to breathe (thought I had a relapse did ya? NO! NO! NO!)
Last Saturday I watched a good part of the NHL draft to see what new names I could learn to pronounce. I was surprised at the number of defensemen that were drafted! I also noticed something you don't see in the NFL or NBA or MLB drafts...All the GM's and managers were in the same room!
I also thought it was cool the way each team had one of their own men announce who they would draft compared to having the commish do so. If that has been the standard, then I learned something new. If not, then I am an idiot.
The NBA draft drew quite a bit of interest here locally too for that matter. I originally thought Mr Longhorn LaMarcus Aldridge was going to be the first player drafted. Not so! I even thought the big hoss from LSU Pittsnaugle would get a first round look. That didn't happen. A rabid crowd in Madison Square Garden made for an interesting flirst hour of viewing.
Did you count the number of times a hockey draftee said 'Organ-Eye-Zation?' That struck me as funny. Nonetheless the NFL draft in April is the one that draws the most attention, without question. If Baseball didn't have so damn many rounds, it could be a made for TV deal.
To wit these are the only four drafts I keep an interest in these days as opposed to Guinness backs and Rumpleminze attacks.
I'm happy with the Spartan Maverick choice. I'm not happy that it appears Niko Kapanen, Jason Arnott and Bill Guerin won't be back as Dallas Stars. That's another topic for another time.
Over and out in Big D
Mr Will
