Highland Park: Do You Believe?
With the last three days being kept occupied with a tourney, your Park Cities recap belated but positive nonetheless. I begin with the Girl's Varsity Basketball team, the Lady Scots. Back in early January a home game against Wylie would prove disastrous in a 59-46 loss. Cassie Powell was the villain in that game with the first 13 points off her shooting. The Lady Scots were able to score above 40 in defeat.
Fresh off a come-from-behind-win at Forney earlier last week, Highland Park marched into Wylie High School and allowed themselves to trail 9-0 before turning it around. Lucy Lawson would have 13 points by the half, trailing only by 7.
Despite numerous leads of 9,7,5,3, and 1, the Lady Pirates watched their once powerful lead evaporate as the 'tenacity on D' courtesy of Lawson, Ashley May, Maggie Deichert and Meggie Taylor was cause to create points of turnovers and second chances with offensive rebounds. Allison Keller kept the team alive with some CRUCIAL treys!
It took OT but Highland Park would stun Wylie 65-63 before a stunned crowd. Katie Hooper made two free throws to cinch it. The Lady Scots are now 3-4 in district play and 14-12 overall. This team now plays two at home against Poteet and Terell. I predict both games shall be won. The Lady Scots are now a legit team in 11 4A thanks to the mantra of one Jeff Nowakowski. I BELIEVE! Scot fans: You should too!
We saw Coach Kostopoulos over the weekend win a trophy at Dallas Cup. It should be no surprise that the month of January also went swimmingly well for the Scots team.
A perfect 4-0 to improve to 12-3-1 overall with a HUGE 6-1 win on rival Arlington Martin. Locke Jillson had a goal whilst Bryan Lawrence is playing like it's November again, securing the second Scot hat trick this season.
In true team philosophy, Bryan could have gotten a 4th goal yet was content to dish to Jillson and acquire a 4th point nonetheless.
This Thursday, Highland Park meets Mansfield for the third time. In their favor shall be a couple of Tigers academically ineligible and a key injury to one player. IF the Scots can't take care of Mansfield, especially in quarter #3 then I foresee problems come playoff time. Otherwise a win and I believe this years Scots skate squad can reach the finals. Hope to see you there! That's last week's Park Cities update...
Over and out in Big D
