No Ordinary Moment.
How often do you have a scenario that plays out in the following manner? You walk into a Starbucks and make small talk, and discover that the stranger you speak to knows a mutual friend?
Walk into a grocery store and run into a person that you haven't seen since college or high school? You already know that you'll never see them again but for that moment. In doing so, you reconnect with a part of your past where, if at peace, you look back fondly. If the past wasn't so fun, there may lie your underlying reason as to why you don't do reunions or the like. With the holiday here and families getting together this got me to thinking.
Is there such a thing as an 'ordinary moment?' I often ask myself,'What if I hadn't walked into that Starbucks when I did? What if I waited 20 minutes? Is there a lesson here?' I usually tell my coworkers/ friends that there are no accidents in life. Everything happens for a reason.
I mention the Starbucks example as yesterday I went to my stop off in Arlington off Collins road. While awaiting a Venti Mocha, an elderly gent in his late 40's walks by to return a plate. I note the East Coast accent, and learn he is new to Texas from Pittsburgh. Sure enough, he's a radio guy! He also happened to work in Seattle back in the 70's. He knew my old boss Norm Gregory. That opened up a flood of memories for this old fool.
Again, I am left to ponder,'Why this moment? Why this cowinkydink?' Opportunity to look back or a reminder to keep ahead? I am not sure at this juncture.
Let this be a friendly reminder to the 20 something crowd here on myspace. When you have a chance to make small talk with a stranger, unless he/she looks predatorial, take a chance! You may find commonalities that you didn't know existed. I think the new term for that is called 'networking'. Better still, just enjoy the moment.
A wise person once said, 'Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. All you have is the moment. Funny how we call that THE PRESENT!
